What It Means to Work with a Xero Platinum Partner (And Why It Should Matter to You)

  • If you’ve looked at the Atria website, you may have noticed the Xero Platinum Partner badge. It sits alongside our name, and if you’re familiar with Xero, you might have a sense of what it represents. If you’re not, it probably looks like one of those credentials that firms display because they can, without it meaning very much in practice.

This article is for the second group. Because Platinum status is not a logo you can simply apply for – and what it actually represents has a direct bearing on the service you receive as a client.

How the Xero Partner Programme Works

Xero is the cloud accounting software used by hundreds of thousands of UK businesses. Alongside selling directly to businesses, Xero operates a partner programme for accountancy and bookkeeping firms who use the software on behalf of their clients.

The programme has four tiers: Starter, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Progression through the tiers is based primarily on two things: the number of clients a firm has actively using Xero, and the level of Xero-certified expertise within the team. Platinum is the highest tier available. It is not awarded on the basis of tenure, relationship, or marketing spend – you earn it through volume and competence, and you maintain it the same way.

In practice, this means Platinum Partners are among the most active and experienced Xero users in the country. They work with Xero every day, across a wide range of client businesses, and their teams hold current certifications across the platform.

What That Means for You as a Client

The practical difference between working with a Platinum Partner and a firm with a more limited Xero relationship shows up in a few specific ways.

The first is depth of knowledge. Xero is a capable platform, but like most software, the difference between basic use and effective use is significant. A firm at Platinum level has typically seen the full range of what the platform can do – its reporting, its integrations, its automation features, its quirks – and knows how to configure it properly for different types of business. That matters when you’re setting up a new system, troubleshooting something that isn’t working, or trying to get more out of what you already have.

The second is speed and efficiency. When a firm processes a high volume of Xero work, the routine tasks become genuinely routine. Reconciliations happen faster. Issues are spotted earlier. The team doesn’t need to look things up that they should already know. That efficiency ultimately translates into more time available to spend on the work that actually requires thinking – your numbers, your situation, your questions.

The third is access. Platinum Partners have a closer relationship with Xero than firms at lower tiers. That includes access to Xero’s support channels, early visibility of platform changes, and in some cases input into product development. When something changes in Xero – a new feature, a process update, a change that affects how your accounts are managed – we tend to know about it before it affects you.

    The Certification Side of It

Alongside the client volume requirement, Platinum status requires that a firm’s team hold Xero certifications – and keeps them current. These aren’t one-off qualifications. Xero updates its platform regularly, and the certification requirements reflect that. Holding Platinum status means the people working on your accounts have been trained and assessed on the current version of the software, not a version from several years ago.

This matters more than it might initially seem. Cloud accounting software evolves quickly. Features that didn’t exist two years ago are now standard. Integrations that used to require manual workarounds are now seamless. A team that stays current with the platform is better placed to make those improvements available to you without you having to ask.

Xero and the Wider Technology Picture

Xero on its own is a strong foundation, but the firms that get the most from it tend to be those that understand how it fits into a broader technology picture. At Atria, Xero sits at the centre of a connected set of tools: Dext for document and receipt capture, and Karbon, giving a practice management approach that keeps everything current rather than catching up at year-end.

The value of that connected approach is that your financial information is accurate, up to date, and accessible when you need it – not just when someone gets around to processing it. That’s a different experience from the traditional model where accounts are a historical document produced once a year, and it’s one of the things that makes timely, useful conversations about your business possible.

Platinum status means we have the expertise to make that work properly. It’s not a given at every firm.

A Note on What It Doesn’t Mean

Xero Platinum is a meaningful credential, but it’s worth being clear about what it isn’t.

It’s not a guarantee of broader accountancy quality. Platinum status speaks to depth of Xero knowledge and client volume – it doesn’t, by itself, tell you anything about a firm’s approach to client relationships, the quality of their advice, or whether they’ll actually pick up the phone when you need them. Those things matter too, and they’re worth asking about separately.

What Platinum does tell you is that the technical foundation is solid. The software will be set up properly. The team knows what they’re doing on the platform. And when Xero changes, which it does regularly, the firm you’re working with will be across it.

That’s the baseline you should expect. What happens above that baseline is where the relationship really takes shape.

    Making the Most of It

If you’re already a client of Atria and you’re not sure whether you’re getting the most from Xero, it’s worth having that conversation with us. There are often features that clients aren’t using – reporting tools, payment integrations, automated reconciliation – that would save time and give better visibility. We’re well placed to help with that.

If you’re considering switching accountants and you’re currently with a firm that has a more limited Xero relationship, it’s worth understanding what that means for how your accounts are actually managed. Not every firm is the same, and the difference in day-to-day experience can be more significant than the headline numbers suggest.

If you’d like to talk about how we use Xero at Atria, or what better use of the platform could look like for your business, get in touch with the team. We’re always glad to have that conversation.

This article reflects the Xero Partner Programme as at June 2026. Programme tiers and requirements are set by Xero and may be subject to change. For current information, visit xero.com.
